A milling machine is a machine tool that functions as a metal cutting machine. In principle the component is to be cut (from now onwards we call it as machined in place of cut) is held rigidly on a  machine table by some work holding device called fixture, as if the component is a part of the machine. The cutting tool is fixed to a rotating member of the machine. The cutter is normally round & rotates on its axis. 

Common classifications are whether it is vertical or horizontal. These machine tools are highly complex and it is highly recommended to get a milling machine manual to aid in use.

Milling machines were first developed by Eli Whitney to mass produce interchangeable parts that were not possible by manual operation such as filing. Then onwards the development and improvement of milling machine was continuous. On present day CNC milling machines are available in market, on which parts are machined to a high accuracy. The accuracy is to the extent of 0.02 mm. Besides due to development of cutting tools high cutting speed is used to machine parts. Thus the hourly production is increased to multi folds.

 

Types of Milling Machine Manuals


A) Depending on the construction:-

 1) Horizontal milling machines: Cutter axis of rotation is horizontal 

2) Vertical Milling machine: Cutter axis of rotation is vertical 

3) Universal milling machine: In this type of machine the cutter axis of rotation could be 

horizontal or vertical as per our need. It is a combination of 1 & 2.

B) Depending on accuracy of component machined:

1) Production milling machine: For regular production jobs 

2) Tool Room milling machine: Producing parts of Jigs & fixtures.

C) Depending on the driving devices used :-( Drive means an Induction motor electrically 

controlled or electrically motor electronically controlled that is termed as servo control)

1) Conventional milling machine: The machines mentioned above 

2) CNC Milling machine: The milling machine where there movement of table, cutters etc:- are 

controlled electronically. This is a modern development.

 

There are many more classifications, such as laser controlled, Water jet machine etc:-. This is

not the place to discuss all these things here.

 

There are many ways of classification of milling machine depending on usage & application. There is 

no definite way of classification.
