Operation Guide for Lathe

Let’s use a lathe! Before using this machine tool we have to know about three important terms. Those are Rotating Speed, Depth of Cut and Feed (Sending Speed). Rotating speed is the number of rotations of the chuck of a lathe. It is expressed in rpm (rotations per minute). The depth of cut is the perpendicular distance measured from the machined surface of the work piece to the uncut surface of the work piece. The Feed of a cutting tool in the Lathe is the distance (m) of the tool advances for each revolution of the work piece. The depth of cut, rotating speed and feed (sending speed) must be adjusted perfectly to get an efficient process with a beautiful surface finish. Beginners must operate the lathe with low rotating speed, small depth of cut and low sending speed.

Now we have to select a cutting tool. There are different types and shapes of cutting tools such as side tool, cutting-off tool and boring bar. The operator must select the proper cutting tool depending on the work piece material he wants to cut. If the cutting tool is not adjusted properly then the surface of the work piece will become rough and there will be a bad noise. So, the angle that cutting tool creates with the work piece surface is very important. After the desired shape of the work piece is achieved the operator must switch off the lathe.
